John Locke and Land Ownership John Locke in The Second Treatise of Civil Government makes several key arguments about what makes land ownable, these ideologies differ from how land ownership works in America but it is easy to see how America’s early days could have aligned with this ideology. In this paper I will focus on two key principles that Locke believed in that are basic requirements for land ownership. The first of these is that land ownership is obtained through labor and that items on the land have no value until labor is applied and the second describes government’s role in land ownership as simply being that the labor applied to land precedes government and government cannot dispose of the estates of the subjects arbitrarily and instead should be limited to securing the life and property of its citizens, and is only necessary because in an ideal, anarchic state of nature, various problems arise that would make life more insecure than under the protection of a minimal state. The term government will reference only the actual ruling body that â€Å"influences daily life based on policies and procedures they enact†. At the last term reward will refer to, â€Å"an item or exchange of labor promised or normally expected given in exchange for labor or with no expectation of any kind of return. The principle that labor is a prerequisite to land ownership fits in perfectly with the needs and situation of the early American nation. Outside of key city areas a majority of this nation’s land was unclaimed and unused bearing none of the fruits of labor and essentially leaving all of its value unclaimed and untouched. With a bounty of land larger than anyone person could actually work and apply labor to, it made sense to encourage land expansion. With land expansion individuals could claim land through labor and the value and goods on that land would no longer go to waste as unused items that could have benefitted society as a whole. The second principle helps to place limits on what the government can do once a parcel of land is owned by an individual. It is safe to say that any reasonable person would not like to see their possessions and livelihood wiped away with one fell swoop, but if governments have no restrictions in the use of their power it would be all too easy to force someone from their land, effectively robbing them of all their possessions and the livelihood that past labor has brought them. This is why Locke insisted that the government role in land owner ship remain limited in scope only to the extent that is needed to ensure this doesn’t happen. Without this assurance from governmental takeover acts similar to his could become standard practice. An unjust government might routinely perform these actions, unjustly claiming the land. This would result in a diminishment of the value of labor and would remove the incentives to work land and would result in a decrease in goods. Because of this looming threat it is clear that government must have some restrictions on acquiring land to avoid unjust actions and encourage a general sense of trust and security in the government. A government that is without citizens that have some sort of trust and security provided by having a reliable, continual and trustworthy shelter is bound to fail since this is a basic need of humans in general. Modern science can help prove the stress and additional energy expenditure humans endure if they can’t find a sense of comfort, safety and belonging a study performed by Dr. Gilman while at Princeton University showed, â€Å"humans that are in constant fear of loss of shelter expend an average of 2900 calories daily† (Gilman 03/01/2012), along with this extra energy expenditure a lack of shelter creates stress that in turn creates a reduction in productivity. This stress can actually change the human brain reaction method resulting in it , â€Å"going from more sophisticated but slower modes to the faster behaviors of the older brains when we are under stress† (Gilman 03/01/2012). This change in brain behavior limits creative thinking and essentially devolves human thought to a lower state this combined with the increased calories expenditure creates a vast pool of diminished talent that when viewed in a large scale population level, results in a huge waste of resources that could be easily reduced by the assurance of land ownership and security. The easiest way for a government to meet this need is to let individuals provide additional goods to society by applying labor to their land thereby reducing their energy requirements and providing goods for the benefit of all. With all the complications that are possible when it comes to providing for the needs of the many, it only makes to allow individuals the freedom of land ownership that will help reduce their needs while simultaneously benefitting others. This notion of having some sort of fruit from your labor is fundamental to increasing one’s value and having a desire to perform work that can be beneficial to all. A study from Yale University performed by Dr. Greene helps to illustrate just how deeply rooted this concept is into human psychology, an individual will work perform work equivalent to their valuation of a reward. The study was meant to determine the amount of work an individual would perform without a reward versus the amount of work performed for a reward. The study concluded that, â€Å"any individual who was assigned a tasked performed that task to completion with more detail and more efficiently when rewarded as compared to no reward† (Mark et al. 1978). This study helps to demonstrate that human psychology insists that any individual will perform more work and therefore be a more productive member of society if only that individual receives something for the labor they put in. As mentioned earlier if an individual lives under constant threat of having everything taken from them it is essentially making them perform labor on their land without a reward resulting in less work being performed and less goods for all of mankind, the only solution that removes this fear is placing limits on when and if a government can take someone’s land from them. With removal of this fear an individual can and likely will utilize labor to its fullest extend thereby adding value to the land. It is clear that the benefits of land ownership as defined through the use of labor allows for the creation of the best society possible, one that can help to provide for mankind as a whole, increase the value and abilities of its citizens that actively partake and utilizes the resources at hand to the best of its abilities without waste and undue stress. A society that is free of these constraints and provided with the best ossible reward for work and sense of security can only flourish and enjoy the fruits of their labor helping to create the best future possible. Vietnam War and LBJ To many, the 1960's could definately be considered one of the most controversial decades of this century. It was a time in which many mistakes were made evolving around the Vietnam War which resulted in the immense suffering of two nations. The war had many casualties; along with the death of soldiers and civilians, LBJ's presidency and the 'Great Society' also were killed by the war. The US's fear of the domino theory led them in an attempt to control the spread of communism in North Vietnam, whose government was led by Ho Chi Minh. This attempt had failed in many ways because of an inexperienced president and his unarticulated ideals of how to control a war and satisfy his country at the same time. After the unfortunate assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, his successor, vice-president, Lyndon Baines Johnson, or LBJ, was forced to take the plunge into presidency at a crucial time. The Vietnam War had already been ignited and US involvement was apparent. Because Jo hnson was an insecure man, and with that insecurity came a fear of being ridiculed, he wanted to show the American people that he could be the best president in US history. Although his intentions to create a 'Great Society' and to win the war in Vietnam were probably for the best, he still managed to make more mistakes that anything else. In August of 1964, LBJ, wantin to look serious about the halt of communism, bombed the North Vietnamese for carrying out attacks on US warships, however, this was mainly to look tough in front of his rival Goldwater. This incident became known as the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. "We knew that the hostile actions against the US ship on the high seas of the Gulf of Tonkin, have today required me to order the military forces of the USto take action and refire." (LBJ) This incident triggered the Viet Cong to try and overtake South Vietnam so in retaliation LBJ sent in 35,000 troops to stop them even after he had promised, upon his election, that no Americ ans would have to fight in Vietnam. During this time that the war is in progress Johnson is still forking out billions to try and improve education, create jobs, and public housing for his 'Great Society' but this is yet another dream of LBJ;s that will soon become a nightmare. The biggest mistake that Johnson ever made was quite possibly the underestimation of the tenacity of the Vietnamese. Johnson simply didn't understand the roots of their culture. The North Vietnamese wanted one nation under one government while the US wanted a North and a South, and the South Vietnamese seemed to be caught in the middle - all they wanted was a democracy in which they owned their own land. The demands for troops grew greater and greater and soon money that should of been invested in America's economy was spent keeping the war in progress and order in South Vietnam. Martin Luther King in one speech, dictated that America spent about $332,000 to kill a Viet Cong while a poor person in the US only costed about $53. With the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the consistant bombing by the US on the Vietnamese eventually resulted in a mass build up of turmoil in America. Johnson, who was at one point looked at as a hero and acknowledged for his ignition in the women's fight for equality as well as The Voting Rights Act (1965), which permitted the black community to vote, now was possibly the most hated man in America. "He was riding a tiger he couldn't get off." (George Ball) Johnson had begun to lie to the public, saying that the war was under control and exaggerating the number of Viet Cong that were killed but Johnson had overestimated teh patience of the US people. They wanted to put an end to the war and as a result riots broke out due to a lack of respect for authority and the law. New SAT Prep Guidelines Now That the Old SAT Is Over SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Did you hear? The old SAT was given for the final time on January 23rd, 2016. What does that mean for students still studying for the SAT? We'll discuss the implications of the old SAT sunset and what you need to do for new SAT prep! The Transition Timeline In 2014, the makers of the SAT announced that they were going to change the format of the SAT to be much closer to that of the ACT. The transition date of March 2016 was given. This made January 2016 the final official time the old SAT would be given. Now that this date has passed, what should you do? We have two scenarios below, based on whether you've taken the SAT before or not. Find the one that fits your circumstances, and read its guidelines. What If You've Never Taken Any SAT Before? Are you in the class of 2017 or later, and you've never taken the SAT before? The good news it that the choice will be easier for you because you can only register for the new SAT at this point! You don't need to calculate how to best navigatetaking the old SAT vs. the new SAT. We do want to emphasize a few points, some of which is good advice all around. Take the New SAT Earlier, Rather than Later Because the SAT is coming, you might be afraid to take it. You might feel that there's not enough known about the test, or you don't want to be a guinea pig. Thus, you might be tempted to wait a bit before taking the New SAT - maybe take the June exam, or even the September exam.This is the wrong approach. You want to get the most exposure to the test as early as possible. With the uncertainty that comes with the new version of the test, the best way to gain more information about it is to take the new SAT as soon as you can. Firsthand experience gives you data that no tutor and no book can provide. You also know exactly howyouwill react to the new SAT. No more listening to Tim talk about how new SAT Math questions were hard for him or Susan talk about how new SAT Reading questions were confusing for her you'll see exactly how you react. Taking the new SAT sooner rather than laterlets you reduce uncertainty quickly and early. While any dry-run will give you information, it is probably best that you prep at least a little bit before your first new SAT. If you don't prep, your testing experience and score will not reflect your best effort and final performance. You get a lot less useful information from a "no study at all" dry run. Also, in the chance this test is yourbest score, you want that best score to be as high as possible! Another reason to take the new SAT earlier is that you'll get multiple bites at the apple. Since the new SAT is so new, it is likely that minor details in the format, scale, or other areaswill change between the first few administrations. (Conversely, the 10-year-old previous version of theSAT probably didn't change very much in the last fewyears.) If one of these administrations is especially easy or suitable for you, then that's great news because, with superscoring and score choice, only your best score matters. Remember that, with superscoring and score choice, it's better to have more variation in your score, and you'll likely get more variation with the first few tests. Finally, taking the SAT early also lets you retake it in the fall in case you don't like your score. This means you'll have more options for the future. Some might argue there are strategic reasons to take the new SAT later. One is that there will be more prep material out. This is true if you're willing to wait until September, but for those in the class of 2017, that's not a great choice. You have to study during the summer instead of preparing college applications. Also, in case you don't do well, you'll face time pressure for a re-test. If you're trulyafraid of the uncertainty of the new SAT, doing ACT prep is a good idea (see below). However, I believe trying to strategically delay is penny wise, pound foolish. Taking it earlier, studying more, and putting more resources into the new SAT are surefire ways to score higher. Consider the ACT Some of you may still be afraid of the new SAT. What if you're a guineapig while the SAT is trying to figure things out? What if they mess up somehow? What if colleges don't know what to do with the scores? While these are not major concerns, there is one serious option you should consider if you're just uneasy taking the ACT. The ACT has had a proven reputation in its currentformat for many years now. The ACT is also very close in format to the new SAT so there should not be a major loss in preparing forthe ACT format. For those worried about change or the lack of new SAT material, ACT prep can be the way to go. My only advice would be to get started early on this too, so you have the most information as soon as possible. Sometimes changing the test you take can be good. What If You've Taken the SAT Before, But It Was the Old SAT? If you're totally satisfiedwith your score, then great you don't need to do anything else. However, if you want a better SAT score, read on! You're actually in a better position if you've taken the old SAT before. This is because you're getting two bites at the apple now. If you take the new SAT and find it fits your style better, thenyou should keep your new SAT score via superscoring. Likewise, if you take the new SAT and find out you don't do as well, then submit just your old SAT score via superscoring. Because superscoring takes your best test score, having more tests is good, and having different tests is good. The biggest piece of advice is to indeed take the new SAT. (In fact,the new SAT was officially designed to target everyone in theClass of 2017 and later.) Again, the same advice of taking the new SAT early applies to you. By taking it early, you get more information, more bites at the apple (especially when the test is changing the fastest), and you'll maximize your chance of getting the score you want whileleaving summer for applications. Which Test Dates? March, May, June or October? The new SAT will be given in March, May, June and again in October of 2016 which date should you pick? One factor you should definitely note is that it will take a long time for the test makersto grade the new SAT. Usually, the test makerstake less than three weeks to grade the test. For March, the grading time will be more than two months, and for May/June, more than six weeks! This matters for you because you'll have less time to re-test in case of a low score. March scores are predicted to be out early enough that you can register for the June date. You'll likely have aboutthree weeks betweenthe March score release (aroundMay 17th, 2016) andthe June 4th test. Thus, March has some advantage in that you can squeeze in one more test before the fall, but it will be a tight squeeze. Conversely, if you take the May or June test, you will not know yourscore in time to retake it before the fall. Also, keep in mind that, in our data, taking the SAT earlier is correlated with being more determined about the SAT and performing better. It's easy for distracted students and busy parents to turn "I'll study later" to "Oops I guess we didn't have enough time to study!" All three choices, March, May, and June, are substantially superior to October. If you do well before summer, then you're better off because you can spend the summer doing college applications. Putting in enough time on apps is a huge predictor of acceptance chances. If you do poorly, it's still good you took the SATearly: you know what trips you up on the test, and your studying during the summer will be more focused and effective. Conclusion The old SAT is over, and so preppers need to transition to a new study regime. Students who haven't taken the SAT ever before have it easy: they can just pretend there is no transition. For these students, there are advantages to taking it early and before summer. Students who have taken the old SAT should definitely take the new SAT, if possible, to take advantage of the "best of multiple scores" advantage. Second Battle of the Marne in World War I The Second Battle of the Marne lasted from July 15 to August 6, 1918, and was fought during World War I (1914-1918). Conceived as an attempt to draw Allied troops south from Flanders to facilitate an attack in that region, the offensive along the Marne proved to be the last the German Army would mount in the conflict. In the opening days of the fighting, German forces made only minor gains before being halted by a constellation of Allied troops. Due to intelligence gathering, the Allies were largely aware of German intentions and had prepared a sizable counter-offensive. This moved forward on July 18 and quickly shattered German resistance. After two days of fighting, the Germans commenced a retreat back to trenches between the Aisne and Vesle Rivers. The Allied attack was the first in a series of sustained offensives that would bring the war to an end that November.      Spring Offensives In early 1918, Generalquartiermeister Erich Ludendorff commenced a series of attacks known as the Spring Offensives with the goal of defeating the Allies before American troops arrived on the Western Front in large numbers. Though the Germans scored some early successes, these offensives were contained and halted. Seeking to continue pushing, Ludendorff planned for additional operations that summer.    Believing that the decisive blow should come in Flanders, Ludendorff planned a diversionary offensive at the Marne. With this attack, the hoped to pull Allied troops south from his intended target. This plan called for an offensive south through the salient caused by the Aisne Offensive of late May and early June as well as a second assault to the east of Reims. German Plans In the west, Ludendorff assembled seventeen divisions of General Max von Boehms Seventh Army and additional troops from Ninth Army to strike at the French Sixth Army led by General Jean Degoutte. While Boehms troops drove south to the Marne River to capture Epernay, twenty-three divisions from Generals Bruno von Mudra and Karl von Einems First and Third Armies were poised to attack General Henri Gourauds French Fourth Army in Champagne. In advancing on both sides of Reims, Ludendorff hoped to split the French forces in the area. Allied Dispositions Supporting the troops in the lines, French forces in the area were buttressed by approximately 85,000 Americans as well as the British XXII Corps. As July passed, intelligence gleaned from prisoners, deserters, and aerial reconnaissance provided the Allied leadership with a solid understanding of German intentions. This included learning the date and hour that Ludendorffs offensive was set to commence. To counter the enemy, Marshal Ferdinand Foch, Supreme Commander of the Allied forces, had French artillery strike the opposing lines as German forces were forming for the assault. He also made plans for a large-scale counter-offensive which was set to launch on July 18. Armies Commanders: Allies Marshal Ferdinand Foch44 French divisions, 8 American divisions, 4 British divisions, and 2 Italian divisions Germany Generalquartiermeister Erich Ludendorff52 divisions The Germans Strike Attacking on July 15, Ludendorffs assault in Champagne quickly bogged down. Utilizing an elastic defense-in-depth, Gouraud’s troops were able to quickly contain and defeat the German thrust. Taking heavy losses, the Germans halted the offensive around 11:00 AM and it was not resumed. For his actions, Gouraud earned the nickname the Lion of Champagne. While Mudra and Einem were being halted, their comrades to the west fared better. Breaking through Degouttes lines, the Germans were able to cross the Marne at Dormans and Boehm soon held a bridgehead nine miles wide by four miles deep. In the fighting, only the 3rd US Division held earning it the nickname Rock of the Marne (Map).   Holding the Line The French Ninth Army, which had been held in reserve, was rushed forward to assist the Sixth Army and seal the breach. Aided by American, British, and Italian troops, the French were able to halt the Germans on July 17. Despite having gained some ground, the German position was tenuous as moving supplies and reinforcements across the Marne proved difficult due to Allied artillery and air attacks. Seeing an opportunity, Foch ordered plans for the counteroffensive to commence the next day. Committing twenty-four French divisions, as well as American, British, and Italian formations to the attack, he sought to eliminate the salient in the line caused by the earlier Aisne Offensive. Allied Counterattack Slamming into the Germans with Degouttes Sixth Army and General Charles Mangins Tenth Army (including the 1st and 2nd US Divisions) in the lead, the Allies began to drive the Germans back. While the Fifth and Ninth Armies conducted secondary attacks on the eastern side of the salient, the Sixth and Tenth advanced five miles on the first day. The salient retaken, the Allies dug in to consolidate their gains and prepare for further offensive action. Aftermath The fighting along the Marne cost the Germans around 139,000 dead and wounded as well as 29,367 captured. Allied dead and wounded numbered: 95,165 French, 16,552 British, and 12,000 Americans. The final German offensive of the war, its defeat led many senior German commanders, such as Crown Prince Wilhelm, to believe that the war had been lost. One area of psychology and investigation, (an occupation? or shall I say craft?), many ways to refer and interpret it, with a complex past intermingling various areas of study, Profiling, like any other area of study, has both its advantages and disadvantages. Yet, how useful is it as an investigative tool? It certainly isn’t considered as a hard science, however this does not mean that is should be discarded and not taken seriously. Or does it? I say advantages and disadvantages, because whilst my personal position is towards profiling in general, it can only be used in conjunction with other, more deeply studied police work. Here I will discuss mainly its advantages and why I hold the position in favor of criminal profiling, but some disadvantages will obviously be mention in relation the advantages. As asserted by Wilson and Seaman (2007), one of the first psychological profilers was James A. Brussel, M.D in the 1950, then dubbed â€Å"The Sherlock Holmes of the Couch.† Although he was very accurate in providing the police with a profile of the criminal which helped them locate and arrest the Mad Bomber, using primarily his handwriting on letters sent to the police, his â€Å"technique was not enough in itself to change traditional law enforcement procedures.† (Wilson and Seaman, 2007). It was only in the early 1970s that the FBI Behavioral Science Unit in Quantico decided to use this profiling technique when investigating violent crimes. The Houses of Parliament was now a ghost building; there had not been a government since the assassination of Prime Minister Smith, which was a good, yet sinister event, for it was PM Smith who had caused this global never-ending power cut. The situation PM Smith had left us in was abhorrent to us all. As I was looking at the vacated Houses of Parliament noticed the Victorian clock Big Ben had completely stopped. This eerie feature made the clock feel as if the world had stopped in this dramatic time change.It was as if time had stopped around me and I was the only person left on a deserted island. The rasping sound of the cold air that blew around me was high pitched. I knew vaguely that it was about 1 pm on an August afternoon, but there was, again, very little sun. The sun shining was a rare and distant thing. I looked up in desperation at the clouds and saw cascading radiation of light seeping through the dark clouds. I was about to turn away when suddenly I saw SST Pall's Cathed ral. The landmark dome had survived the bombings of WorldWar II where everything around it was crumbling away. This building showed the great British spirit during the war and represented how the building stayed strong, just like the country did throughout 1939-1945. However, this building was now smoking, the dark black smoke rose from the top like steam from a boiled kettle.
